When Life Changes the Plan, but Not the Direction
The last two years have taught me that a change of plan can happen at almost any moment.
I learned not to become too attached to how something was supposed to happen. I knew that I could choose a direction, but I could not predict the entire journey.
Or at least I thought I had already learned that.
I did not go back to a full-time job. I found the courage to build my own personal brand. I decided to begin my coaching studies and continue developing as a mentor.
For the first time in a long time, I felt that I was truly choosing my own path.
And that was exactly when everything life had been patiently teaching me over the last two years seemed to disappear from my mind.
I did not even notice the moment when I started expecting that, because I was finally following my own path, everything would begin to go my way.
That because I had made the right decisions, life would confirm them.
That because I had found the courage to choose myself, the road ahead would become easier.
Not completely free from problems, of course. In theory, I still knew that I could not control everything.
But somewhere deep inside, I began to believe that the hardest part was already behind me. That all I had to do now was take action, and life, fate or the universe would adjust to the direction I had chosen.
Then my plans began to change again.
Some were delayed. Others suddenly became impossible in the form I had imagined. Situations appeared that I had not predicted and could not control.
And although I already knew this feeling so well, my first reactions were panic and fear.
As though a change of plan meant that I was losing the ground beneath my feet again.
As though complications were a sign that perhaps I had made the wrong choice after all.
As though the right path should be the one where everything unfolds exactly as we imagined it would.
And my autopilot switched on immediately.
Because knowing something is one thing.
Remembering it when life turns our plans upside down once again is something entirely different.
The body and subconscious mind often react faster than the conscious part of us. Before we have a chance to look at the situation calmly, fear appears, followed by the need to regain control and the belief that everything is beginning to fall apart.
But our first reaction does not have to decide what we do next.
Just because autopilot takes the wheel for a moment does not mean we have to let it keep driving.
We can stop.
Notice what has taken control.
Wait for the first wave of emotion to pass.
And remind ourselves of what we already knew.
Choosing my own path is not an agreement with life that, from that moment on, everything will happen the way I want it to.
It does not guarantee that my plans will not be delayed, changed or turned completely upside down. And it does not mean that every obstacle is a sign that I am moving in the wrong direction.
Sometimes the timing changes.
Sometimes the way forward changes.
Sometimes an unplanned pause appears.
Today, I understand more clearly that I can trust my decision even when I cannot predict what will happen next. I can know what I want without knowing when or in what form it will happen.
I can have a direction without holding tightly to one particular plan.
Because a change of plan does not mean that I am going backwards. It does not mean that I have chosen the wrong path.
Just because life is asking me to reconsider my plans does not mean it is asking me to reconsider the direction I have chosen.
This is what trusting my own path means to me. Not giving up on plans, but being willing to change them without losing sight of what truly matters to me.
The plan may change. The direction is still mine.
